I am fabulously hopeful about club neuro and if my son were old enough (he's 11) I'd send him.
At Strides, I am referring my teen clients to these events.
We need something now for the 12-14 year old set. If I could just get some extra time between work and raising three children......!!! Actually, another parent at Stanbridge Academy and I are discussing how to do just this sort of thing on a bi-weekly basis for the students there. A facilitated and semi-structured social activity for kids in grade 5 and 6, to start. We will begin with larger groups and as the chemistry between smaller groups or dyads makes itself known, additional dates between those students can be arranged in more intimate settings.
I think it would be helpful for parents everywhere to begin coordinating and running group peer-dates in rotation. It is hard for our kids to get together and too often if engagement is not scheduled on a regular basis, other matters take priority and it doesn't happen. We are excited for the kids and look forward to sharing the responsibility of supervising these dates -
If anyone has done something like this, either as a student participant or as parent - I'd love to hear about those experiences and advice you may have to offer for choosing activities, outing settings, etc... or anything at all.
Diane :)
Hey Diane -
If the parents at Stanbridge need some ideas, I'd be glad to help. Just getting the kids together is a great thing! An activity, a couple of parents who agree on what to do and not to do, and you're off, really.
The San Jose Asperger's group at Meetup.com does events for the Tweens, but haven't been to any of them yet. You may want to check that out, too!
